Leisure Boggle

Submitted here by Kira Paran on April 6, 2009

Size of Group: 2 - fairly unlimited

Equipment: paper, pens, stop watch, alphabet on slips of paper in a container to draw from

Objective: Cooperation, communication, and leisure awareness

Description: In teams, have participants brainstorm positive leisure activities that start with that rounds letter. Each round consists of 1 minute, draw from the container, state the letter, and start the timer. Teams share their answers with the entire group. One point is gained for each answer that no other team wrote down. Note: Game can be played individually.

Debrief: Discussion around the diversity of leisure activities. Can you name one activity you had never heard of? Was there an activity mentioned that you would like to try? Was there an activity mentioned you used to participant in and would like to again?

Burnout

I found this handout on Pinterest.  As therapists, we need to make sure we're taking care of ourselves too- not just our clients! :)

Hospital Mental Health Jeopardy

This is a jeopardy game that we created at our facility for those inevitable "sick days" when no activity therapist is able to work.  It's a pretty simple game, and most of the other staff members can run it if needed. You can adapt some of the questions to reflect the needs, schedule, etc. at your particular facility.

Dimensions of Health Analysis

via
Dimensions of Health Analysis
Review the 6 Dimensions of Health with patients.  Talk about each area and how we can achieve health in each area.

Give each patient a copy of the worksheet entitled “Dimensions of Health.”  Have them write down different activities they do each day that contribute to health and wellness in each category.

Discuss the lists with the group.  Consider the following questions:
·       What specific ways do you maintain physical health? Emotional health? Spritual health? Etc.
·       Which dimension is most healthy for you?
·       In which dimension are you the least healthy?
·       How can you improve wellness in the environmental dimension? Social dimension? Etc.
·       How is each area connected to another dimension (for example, how does emotional health relate to physical health or mental health to environmental health?

Conclude by having patients set specific goals to improve one or more dimensions of health.

**This activity could also be done in conjunction with the Leisure Time Clocks activity.  If so, have patients separate the items they listed on their clocks into the Dimensions of Health Worksheet, and analyze these.**

Positive Reframes

This week's Friday Handout is also from Pinterest.  I'm excited to use this in groups and help patients understand their positive traits, not just the negative side of things.

Change

I loved this when I saw it on Pinterest!  I feel like almost everyone can relate to it, whether it be the patient or the therapist.  What is holding you back??

Afraid of change?

Great Group Games

Today's post is passing on an awesome resource that Jennifer Miller, CTRS, BS, BA emailed me about.  She found a website called http://www.greatgroupgames.com/ one day at work while she was looking for some small group adult games.
fun group games
The best thing about the website is how organized it is.  You can find activities based on group size, age, holiday, etc.  Jennifer also mentioned that there are some {FREE!} powerpoint presentations you can use as well!

Thanks again Jennifer for passing along this great resource!  If anyone has tried any of these activities, be sure to comment or send me an email and let us know how it went!
